Modi’s third word sees a dangerous increase in crimes against minorities: report

Published

Political relations and state complexity

Out of the 345 indecent language events analyzed, 178 were detected from individuals affiliated to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The report claimed that the BJP ruled states demonstrated a high frequency of hate crime incidence, in which Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra were continuously affected.

In many of these states, minorities were targeted during religious festivals or after national events. For example, April 2025 saw a spike in hate crimes after the Pahalgam terror attack, the highest number was re -recorded with Uttar Pradesh.

Religious festival as flashpoint

The report makes an important observation that Hindu festivals like Ram Navami, Holi, Navratri and Ganesh Chaturthi have become opportunities for targeted communal violence. According to APCR, these incidents are exploited by right-wing groups-often with political and media support-to raise against paradise.

In Jodhpur, during Ram Navami, there was a tableau in a procession in which a Muslim man was painted.

In Bermer and Telangana, places of worship were brutally performed.

In Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, incidents of cow vigilance, social boycott and physical attack were reported.

Election strategy behind hate?

The time of many of these incidents is no coincidence, the report argues. Hattle crime and hatred speech allegedly proceeded in elections – not only at the national and state level but also during local elections. In states like Delhi, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand, data pointed to coordinated campaigns designed to promote polarization and strengthen Hindu nationalist support.
