How Kovid and an eager father inspired Hitesh Gulia to be the next big thing for Indian boxing

Hitesh Gulia is a new child on the block.

The 21-year-old boxer of Jhajjar, Haryana has shown a great form this season to win two medals in the boxing World Cup this season-a new set of the top-tier tournament launched by Since Boxing. Hitesh, characterized by the characteristic of the 70 kg division, won gold in Brazil in April, then a silver in Kazakhstan in July. Last year, he won the National Championship and later also won gold in the National Games. The kind of results that have been found at both national and international levels, it is safe to say that it is one of the favorite for medals in the upcoming World Championships, which will begin in Liverpool, England in September.

It is outstanding and is also surprising how Hitashi has increased over a period of 12 to 18 months. He has left a teenager who was fighting to go to national camps to be a favorite for a medal in the World Championship. But according to Hitesh, nothing was immediate. It has been many years since his current look and boxing lineage, mostly the results of hard work he and his father kept during the Kovid years.

“Before Corona, my game was not special. During the time of Corona, I was at home, but my father (Satya Prakash) ensured that I did not leave the training even one day. My father trained me every day, he used to look at YouTube and allow training details. asked.

It was not that his father was a former boxer who pushed his child to the same game. Satya Prakash was far from boxing. He was a taxi driver who used to play football when he was young. Later, his knees gave up and had difficulty in driving cars for a long time. Despite not knowing anything about boxing, Hitesh’s father ensured that he could learn as much as he could for his son.

While the father’s boxing journey started through his son, Hitesh came to the ring as he was overweight. Back in 2014, his parents wanted him to improve his fitness and keep them away from choosing a quarrel with fellow children in school. “I was in class four and was weighing 55 kg,” Hitesh says. He started doing basic items under Hitesh Deshwal, who was his first coach who saw the capacity in him. “When I started winning the matches, when I started enjoying boxing. Three years later, I won my first gold medal in the state level competition.”

The more he won, the more Hitesh and his parents started seeing the future in the game. Then his father received the assurance that his son could work in boxing. Lockdown after years, when Hitesh’s father played an important role, the next turn came in 2022 when Hitesh joined the Indian Navy. This was his meeting with Indian boxing veteran Surajoy Singh, which pushed him to join the Navy, which not only benefited his training, but also gave them financial security. “I was training at Sai Bhiwani Center, Surajoy sir came there with an Indian naval team for a camp. I trained with him. He saw me and asked me if I was interested in joining the Navy. I needed a job at that time and my family also needed it,” who counts Surangy, Akhil Kumar and Vijendra.

As a boxer, Hitesh does not have a specific style. His main philosophy in the ring is to read the opponent. He fights with an open stance with quick counter-punching capabilities. This suits Hitesh when his opponent is more aggressive because his punching accuracy is solid when he fights while backing. The counter-punching has shades of his Idol Vijender and the open guard is similar to his other inspiration Akhil Kumar.

Hitesh is now undergoing training under Dharmendra Singh Yadav, the head coach of the national team, where he tasted international success. In addition to credited to Yadav, Hitesh took the name of John Warbaton, who was his coach at JSW’s Inspire Institute of Sport. “I improved a lot under him. Thanks to him, I won the National Championship Gold Medal with Services and also in the National Games. He tried hard for me.”

Hitesh and the Indian team will go to Sheffield for the 10-day camp in August before landing at Liverpool for the World Championship. Hitesh says that there is no point in going to such a big tournament without the mentality of winning gold. He can earn his big medal in September and he is hoping that this is the beginning of many people.
